NEWS: Monarchs plan end of season finale

This Saturday 3rd October sees the Birmingham Monarchs finish off their home league programme with the Second City Trophy, a meeting for home riders and invited guests.

A full day of racing is planned, starting at 12 noon with the juniors racing, followed by 2pm for the ladies and finally 4pm for the Senior riders with a stellar line up of talent expected.

Invites have been sent to many star riders as the Monarchs plan to see off their season with a bang, quite literally, as a firework display will follow the end of racing!

Top man and World number 2 Chris Timms will be looking to take victory, whilst fellow home stars Ricki Johnson and Mark Winwood will be searching for glory also. British stars Paul Heard, who won the Jim Peck Memorial meeting on Saturday at Great Blakenham, and Lee Aris will give the home men plenty of challenges however.

An exciting line up will be expected for both the women’s and intermediates categories, Ewan Hancox will be looking to finish his fine season with victory too.

A reminder that entrance is free and parking free. Refreshments are available on the day.

Birmingham have one more league meeting at Coventry on the 18th October at 2PM. This will be the Monarch’s final league meeting and also a big day for the junior team, where victory will see them crowned junior champions.

Saturday saw Birmingham veteran riders dominate the Eurovets series again at East Park in round 8. Bob Prince took victory in both the 50’s and 60’s in majestic form whilst Mark Winwood was unbeaten in the 40’s.

With one round left (Bury 10th October) both Winwood (40’s) and Prince  (60’s) already have one hand on the trophies. In the 50’s it’s a straight shootout between Prince and fellow Monarch Hodgkinson for the title, Prince leading by 3 points so it’s all still to play for.

Last week saw local junior school Dorrington Academy visit the track for a come and try session. 30 pupils of year 5 all enthusiastically took to the track taking part in races and the winners getting to race Birmingham’s star youngsters.

Steve Hodgkinson said, “The link up has worked well for both club and academy and there are plans afoot to bring in other year groups in the coming months ahead. With a successful generation of under 14s at the club, we are very committed to get youngsters into cycling.

“We would also like to put on record our thanks to the Birmingham BMX club for helping us with the loan of equipment.”

The Monarchs are planning to continue training through the winter every other Tuesday, with dates confirmed soon. Tuesdays and Thursdays training continues throughout September and October.
