ELITE LEAGUE: League Table after Round 6

Here’s the Cycle Speedway Elite League table after 6 rounds.

Elite League Table (Round 6)

P W D L Points Points Dif.
Horspath 6 6 0 0 12 45
Ipswich 6 4 0 2 8 1
Wednesfield 6 3 0 3 6 38
Sheffield 6 2 0 4 4 9
Poole 6 2 0 4 4 -31
Newport 6 1 0 5 2 -62

Horspath have maintained their 4 point cushion by winning by 10 points at home to Sheffield. It was a hard fought encounter from both sides at the Village, Mark Boaler’s fine overtaking form inspired the Hammers to another win, making it six on the bounce and barring any major slip ups are easily the favourites to take the title back to Oxfordshire. Next up for the league leaders is Wednesfield away at Ashmore Park, while Sheffield face Newport at the Graves, where they will be looking to avenge their defeat at the Olympic Village back in April.

Ipswich’s good season got back on track after a couple of defeats in the two previous rounds, away at Newport. It was a close match with only four points in it, but the Eagles held firm and managed to get their fourth win of the season, moving up to second in the table at the expense of Wednesfield. Newport have not won since beating Sheffield in round two, so could do with putting some points on the board in Yorkshire. Ipswich welcome Poole to Suffolk in round seven, nothing but a win will do for the Eagles if they are going to keep up their title challenge.

Poole will go into that match against the Eagles high on confidence, after putting together two wins on the bounce and beating Wednesfield at home yesterday afternoon. They stay fifth place in the table, but are only behind Sheffield on points difference. The Aces’ title challenge is more than likely over, as Horspath will need to lose three of their last four matches (including two at the Village to come) with Wednesfield winning every match, for them to be in any position to take the title.

Round seven picks back up the weekend after the Nationals on 31st August 2014. Just over a month later the season will be concluded on 5th October 2014, as the remaining 4 rounds are fired off in quick succession.

*Please note the fixtures that appear on the Elite League page of the British Cycling website are wrong for 31st August 2014 – those fixtures are for round 8, which takes place on 14th September 2014. The correct fixtures are (as per the BC events calendar):
