CLUB NEWS: Newport open league campaign with defeat

Newport opened their 2019 South and South West League with a defeat to a
what looks to be once again a very strong Poole side.

The day looked favourable as the visiting pair of Mark Carmichael and
Callum Goward opened with a 6-4 heat advantage, however, Poole responded
in a strong fashion with it being a further 10 heats before Newport
claimed their next advantage.

The Dig-It Landscapes sponsored Newport side lined up with a mix of
experience and youth, with the top scorer Carmichael finishing on 15
points, backed up by Chris Davies and Joe Lewis also returning
double-figure scores of 12 and 10 respectively. In the Junior section,
Kian May impressed with 13 plus 2 bonus points, and S&SW League
debutants Sam Marsh, Toby May, and Ben Truscott getting among the points
with respectable returns of 9, 8 and 7+1.

Newport will be looking to bounce back in two weeks when Horspath are
the visitors, who will be keen to push on after their opening day
victory over the Exeter Aces.
