WEEKEND PREVIEW: A busy weekend of action coming up

A very busy weekend of Cycle Speedway kicks off on Saturday with Round 7 of the South-East Grand Prix series taking place at East London starting at 12 noon. This should have been Round 6 on August 5th but was postponed due to a waterlogged track. Saturday also sees the Welsh Riders Championships take place at East Newport and with the 2023 World Championships looming on the horizon in 7 weeks Wednesfield is the venue for a Great Britain Training Camp. This starts at 12 noon

There is action in all 4 regions on Sunday and we start our preview in the North & Scotland League where Sheffield welcome Astley & Tyldesley to the Graves Tennis Centre in all 3 Divisions. Heckmondwike welcome Hull to Firth Park in Divisions 2 & 3. The Northern section Division Two title will be decided by who wins the match between Heckmondwike and Hull with Heckmondwike leading by one point. Sheffield and Astley can both equal Hull’s points total, but Hull hold a good race points difference. The Fife Fastbowl sees the Revolutions take on Bury in a Division 1 fixture where victory for the home team will see them back in contention for the Division 1 title whereas victory for the Comets will effectively make them champions

Moving on to the South & South Wales region and all 6 teams should have been in action on Sunday. Exeter travel to Southampton with the host club scheduled to field 3 British Champions in their line up, Gavin Wheeler (Over 40’s), Leon Penketh (Junior) and Maddie Saunders (Ladies) whilst Horspath are the visitors to East Newport. Southampton will also face Exeter in a Development League match. However Newport’s match with Poole has been postponed as the Dorset club are unable to raise a team.

There are 2 matches in the Midland Club League where there is a battle of the Monarchs at Perry Hall Playing Fields as Birmingham take on Leicester whilst the other match sees Coventry make the trip to Ashmore Park to take on Wednesfield.

Finally there is action in the South-East League where Kesgrave welcome Hellingly for a Division 2 fixture which is scheduled to take place either side of 2 Youth League matches
