MATCH REPORT: Hill wins Breckland Autos Hethersett Charity Cup

Hethersett Hawks & Swinton & Co staged their annual Hethersett Charity Cup, sponsored by Breckland Autos, on Bank Holiday Monday in warm sunshine and the racing made the best of the weather being competitive but very convivial to entertain the crowd.  It was a real family affair as the line-up had brothers and sisters, fathers and sons and boyfriends and girlfriends so it was no surprise to see sibling rivalry at the top of the scorechart.

The Hill brothers had looked strong all afternoon and when they met in heat 15 it was younger brother Matt who rode a perfect race to keep Ash behind him despite every angle being tried.  Matt had a tough final ride against leading contenders Leigh Cossey and Paddy Wenn.  He flew from grid three at the start to leave his more experienced opponents in his wake to speed to a maximum score and step up on the podium to receive the Cup. Ash Hill finished off with a win to make it a 1-2 for the family as he ended on 19 points.

Cossey and Wenn had a ding-dong battle behind Matt Hill and when the scores were tallied up they had to meet again in a race-off for third place overall.  Cossey made the start but Wenn pulled off a classic first-bend drop move.  One lap later and it was Cossey’s turn to drive under going into to bend and he managed to complete the pass and speed away to win the race.  Other Hethersett contenders Dan Chambers and holder Olly Buxton both had one disastrous race each that dented their chances.
