OBITUARY: Gordon Moorcroft

33/18 News has learnt that Gordon Moorcroft, Team Manager of the Tameside Junior team in the mid 1990’s, passed away on Wednesday 18th October. Gordon’s son Chris posted the following on Facebook’s “I was (or still am) a Cycle Speedway rider!!!”:

“I am sorry to say my dad Gordon Moorcroft passed away last Wednesday 18th October 2023.

“He was Team Manager for Tameside CSC Junior team in the mid 90s when we won the British League North Junior title, driving a car full of teammates around the country to make sure they got to meetings. He was also Tameside club secretary for a short while.

“I hold some wonderful memories with him during these years like our infamous Great Britain trips with Dave Blinston visiting Almere outside Amsterdam where he stood in as “English Speaking” circuit announcer. He looked up to see my green helmet 30’ in the air after I got dropped on the third turn.

“And a trip trip to Sweden where we also got in a few speedway meetings at Örebro and Vetlanda in with Blinner and somehow he got himself nicknamed Mr. Bean with them presenting him a VHS video with subtitles?

“He was with me throughout my cycle speedway journey from 1992 through to about 1997 when I took up Grasstrack and Speedway, which looking back, felt to much longer than it was.

“He used to make sure my bike and kit was always immaculate, often caught cleaning my wheels in the living room much to my mums annoyance.

“Please feel free to share if you think there’s somebody who would like to know of his passing.
